🏛️ Issue of the Week:  August Ballot Amendment 4- Vote NO

Summary

Four key issues have been placed on Missouri's traditionally low-turnout August ballot. August elections are often decided by the most motivated voters while many others pay little attention until November. Over the next month, I'll examine each amendment and explain what's at stake for Missouri voters.

I hope you'll use these newsletters to become informed and discuss these issues with your family, friends, and neighbors. Please feel free to forward this email and encourage others to sign up for the weekly newsletter.

This week, I’ll address why we should all VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 4- the Amendment Subjecting All Missourians to Minority Rule. Here is what you should know:

VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 4- the Amendment Subjecting All Missourians to Minority Rule:

Amendment 4 Would:

•  Give Far Too Much Power to Special Interests. It would allow any special interest group to target one congressional district to sink a ballot initiative that the vast majority of voters in Missouri approved of.

• Give Some Voters in Missouri More Power Than Others. Force any proposed constitutional amendment to win a majority of votes in EVERY SINGLE Congressional District, as opposed to the current threshold of majority voters in the entire state.

• Reduce a Key Citizen Check on the Legislature. Passage will significantly reduce a critical check on a super majority of either party in the state legislature.

Key District 33

Our district is a diverse district that sometimes has conflicting issues within it. It is not as densely populated as St. Louis, nor as rural as counties in Southeastern Missouri. Because those districts are less diverse, if Amendment 4 passes, those votes would potentially have far more power than ours. It would just take one special interest group to target specific voters in either of those two districts to sink the interests of the rest of the entire state.

We deserve each of our votes to matter as much as each of the voters in those districts do.

Democrats, Independents AND Republicans should all be against Amendment 4 as it would cut both ways. A supermajority of either party could pass legislation, and the majority of citizens would no longer be able to check that power unless every single congressional district agreed to do so.

This would essentially create minority rule in Missouri and allow a small group of powerbrokers to assert even more control over all of us.

A Better Path Forward & Conclusion

Amendment 4 is possibly the most dangerous of all of the Amendments on the August ballot. The Initiative Petition process exists because citizens should have a path to act directly when they believe government is not responding to their concerns. Its passage will make it almost impossible to change the Missouri Constitution going forward.

Since August is typically a low turnout election, it is critical that we turn out to vote at least as much as we would in a general election. We need to let our family, friends, and neighbors know that they need to vote NO ON AMENDMENT 4 on August 4 (with no- excuse-needed early voting starting 2 weeks before).

We need the folks of Missouri to become informed about all of these Amendments AND turn out to vote. If we don’t, a very small group of power brokers controlling our government will block voters out of their say in government for decades to come. I’m asking you to read these emails, pass them on and encourage people to show up to vote in August- we can’t wait until November. Thank you for participating and fighting for Missouri.
